004 Haemo...”tea”sis?

Situation

A patient bled from a dental extraction. Biting down on a tea bag stopped the bleeding.

Background

A 56 year old man attended ED with persistent bleeding from a molar extraction by his dentist earlier that day. He was asked to place a tea bag at the bleeding site and bite down, keeping it there for a few minutes. The bleeding did stop after a few minutes and he went home.

Assessment

The tannins in the tea stopped the bleeding.

Recommendation

Post extraction bleeding can be stopped by using a tea bag. The patient must be cooperative and the situation safe to do so.
