009 Burst Balloon

Situation

A newly inserted catheter fell out: a bladder stone had burst the balloon.

Background

A patient presented in AUR. A catheter was inserted to good effect by nurses. Later it came out on its own. Doctor glared at nurse, nurse glared at patient. However the balloon had burst. The patient was later found to have a bladder stone.

Assessment

As the bladder decompressed, the stone was pressed against the catheter balloon causing it to burst.

Recommendation

If a catheter falls out examine the balloon.
