033 Black Eye

Situation

Patient suffered facial injury. X-ray revealed air within the orbit signifying a fracture.

Background

An elderly lady fell. There was bruising all around the the left side of her face and eye. Facial X-ray showed a “black eye brow sign”. CT then showed infra-orbital and maxillary sinus wall fractures.

Assessment

Recommendation

Be aware of the appearance of intra-orbital air on X-ray and consider CT if you see it.
