035 Now Hear This

Situation

Ear laceration repaired after simple regional anaesthetic block of the ear.

Background

Adult suffered a ear laceration needing suturing. Rather than referring to another speciality or another hospital it was sutured satisfactorily in the ED there and then.

Assessment

To do this use lidocaine and a small needle.

Use 2 injection points: above and below the ear, injecting LA all around the ear.

Recommendation

This blocks the greater auricular, lesser occipital and auriculotemporal nerves.

As ever aspirate for blood and be aware of the maximum doses of LA.
