041 Multiple Targets
Situation
A baby had fever and strange rash: it was Erythema Multiforme
Background
A 18 month old baby presented with a fever and rash. The child appeared
ill and was admitted for IV Abx . She was discharged the next day.
Assessment
The child had a viral illness which triggered the Erythema Multiforme
rash.
It looked like this:
Those ring like marks are called target lesions though you’ll notice the lesions can join together in places.
They don’t always need admitting.
Recommendation
Recognise the target lesions in Erythema Multiforme.
Watch out for the causes of it:
Infections: Herpes simplex virus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, other viruses, fungi, and bacteria.
Drugs such as: penicillins, cephalosporins, macrolides, sulfonamides,
anti-tuberculosis agents, antipyretics and others.
