044 Strained Credulity

Situation

Woman simply stood and fractured her hip.

Background

An elderly and obese lady stood up from sitting on her chair in the kitchen. She felt a sudden sharp pain in her hip. She was unable to walk. Diagnosed adductor tendon strain based on the tenderness exactly on the adductor tendon and the lack of any trauma. An x-ray of the hip was done "just in case". This showed a fractured neck of femur.

Assessment

This was an atraumatic hip fracture in an elderly patient.

Recommendation

If an elderly patient presents with hip pain for any reason, even without trauma, do seriously consider performing a x-ray of the hip.
