045 Stand Against Hernias
Situation
Man had a hernia that was only palpable on standing.
Background
A man presented complaining of a groin lump that caused pain at times.
There was no hernia when the patient was examined laying on the bed.
However when the inguinal area was examined with the patient standing
up, the hernia was easily palpable.
Assessment
Gravity helped reveal the hernia when the patient stood up.
Recommendation
If you specifically want to exclude an inguinal hernia examine the
inguinal area with the patient stood up.
