Case 056 High Brow A&E

Situation

Forehead laceration was sutured with nerve block.

Background

An elderly man sustained a laceration above his right eye. Instead of injecting lidocaine into the wound and swelling the area, a supraorbital and supratrochlear nerve block was done.

Assessment

The advantage of using this regional analgesia is it doesn’t distort the anatomy of the wound.

Recommendation

The blue and green areas can be anaesthetised:

Ask a senior colleague how to do it.

Rarely temporary blindness can be a complication if LA enters the orbit.
