059 On Ice
Situation
Amputated finger transported on ice.
Background
A man presented with an amputation of his middle finger, amputation just
distal to the PIPJ. The amputated part and the patient were transported
to the specialist centre for definitive care.
Assessment
The amputated part was wrapped in a saline soaked gauze, then placed in
a plastic bag. This bag was then placed in another bag which was filled
with ice.
Recommendation
The amputated part needs to be kept cool but not in direct contact with
ice.
