060 Gargle Gargle
Situation
Post-tonsillectomy bleed patient treated with hydrogen peroxide
gargles.
Background
An18 year old man presented 4 days post-tonsillectomy, with increased
pain and now bleeding. Temperature 38. A large clot visible in the
tonsillar fossa. Commenced Iv Abx and hydrogen peroxide gargles.
Assessment
It wasn’t a catastrophic bleed and therefore hydrogen peroxide gargles
could be used as a haemostatic agent to reduce bleeding.
Recommendation
The dose for hydrogen peroxide gargles is: hydrogen peroxide 6%, 20ml of
the solution diluted with water 1:6. Gargle don’t swallow.
