068 Too Hot To Handle
Situation
Status epilepticus caused fever, not infection.
Background
An epileptic patient presented with prolonged status epilepticus. His
temperature was 38.4C.
Assessment
Once his seizure was controlled his temperature normalised. There was no
indication of infection in the history and his inflammatory markers were
normal.
Recommendation
Be aware that whilst an infection [including meningitis] should be
considered in feverish patients presenting with seizure, status
epilepticus itself can cause a high temperature.
