080 Beelzebub’s Bezoar

Situation

Patient ate a load seeds that got stuck in the rectum.

Background

A patient presented with abdominal distension, pain and seemed clinically to be in bowel obstruction. During PR exam a mass of large seeds was expelled, releasing the obstruction and curing the patient.

Assessment

This patient was suffering from phytobezoar [a concentration of plant material]. The patient had eaten a lot of a tropical fruit which contained the seeds. These passed undigested through the GI tract.
